Ahmedabad traffic police have intensified their crackdown on helmetless pillion riders, using CCTV footage to issue e-challans. The Motor Vehicles Act mandates helmets for all two-wheeler riders and passengers. A Naranpura resident and a man from Satellite were recently fined as their pillion riders were not wearing helmets.
Gujarat woman cop to be tried for ‘custodial torture’
A court in Thangadh has ordered criminal prosecution of ASI Rekhaben Malkiya for alleged custodial torture after a man’s son eloped with a girl. The charges include assault and illegal detention. The court found prima facie evidence against Malkiya, after an inquiry revealed that local police tried to shield her by coercing witnesses.
Mehsana rally case: Gujarat govt moves HC against Jignesh Mevani’s acquittal
The Gujarat state government has appealed against the acquittal of Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani and nine others in a 2017 case of taking out the ‘Azadi March’ without permission. A district court had overturned their conviction for unlawful assembly. The High Court has asked the government to provide copies of its appeal and adjourned the case.
